We had a chance to catch up with Garlyn to learn a bit more about her and what this achievement means to her career.
WHY DID YOU JOIN THE BRC GLOBAL STANDARDS PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMME?
Being new to the packaging industry, I felt that the programme would assist in strengthening my knowledge base and position me to be a valuable resource for the 18 divisions to which I provide support.
WHAT VALUE DO YOU PERSONALLY FEEL THE BRC GLOBAL STANDARDS PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION BRINGS TO YOU?
This certification gives me a toolbox of techniques that I may rely on when assisting our divisions with questions on implementing the Standard and overall compliance within the organisation.
HOW HAS THE RECOGNITION PROGRAMME IMPACTED YOUR WORK?
Since achieving the BRC Standards Professional certification, I have been able to take on a more active role in auditing our divisions to the BRC Packaging Standard and in preparing them for their initial certification and/or or annual re-certifications. There have also been opportunities to share and implement some of the techniques and best practices discussed at the courses.
WOULD YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE COMPONENT COURSES ANYWAY?
Over time I would have completed each of the required courses. However, completing them collectively over a brief time period makes the concepts more impactful as they are applied to those courses before and after it.
HOW DID YOU GET TO YOUR CURRENT ROLE?
As product safety and compliance continues to become more prevalent and complex, Green Bay Packaging chose to create a role specific to managing these requirements across the organisation.
WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?
I hold BSc degrees in Biology and Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. The majority of my career has been as the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for chemical and heavy industrial manufacturing.
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER AMBITIONS?
I want to continue increasing my knowledge and expertise in packaging compliance with the intention of achieving my Lead Auditor certification and become the organisation's internal BRC "expert"
