Steven Esom – Chairman
Steven Esom is the Chairman of BRC Trading Ltd, the commercial arm of the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Steven is currently the Chairman of the Food Standards Agency's, Retailer Hygiene Rating Scheme. His retail career included Executive Director at Marks & Spencer responsible for Food, prior to that Managing Director of Waitrose from 2003, rapidly expanding the business with two major acquisitions and leading the successful repositioning of Waitrose as a national fresh food lead retailer with broad customer appeal, having initially joined the John Lewis Partnership as Waitrose’s Director of Buying in 1996.
Before joining the Partnership, Steven spent most of his career at Sainsbury’s in commercial roles, including a period with its US subsidiary Shaws, based in Boston. He has served as a Non Executive Director of Carphone Warehouse, a founder Non-Executive Director of Ocado and Chairman of the Princes Rural Action Program, established as part of Business in the Community. He is currently the Chair of British Retail Consortium Trading and a Non-Executive Director at Cranswick plc.
Mark Proctor – Chief Executive Officer
Mark Proctor joined the management team of BRC Trading in June 2013 as Chief Executive Officer. Mark‘s wealth of management and operational experience, in the global food and consumer product safety and quality assurance industries, provides the ideal backdrop to his lead role with BRC Trading.
Mark’s career prior to joining BRC Trading included senior roles with organisations including Exova, SAI Global Assurance Services and European Food Safety Inspection Services (EFSIS).
John Tomlinson - Sales and Marketing Director
John Tomlinson joined BRC as Sales and Marketing Director in June 2015 as part of a shared service covering both the Trade Association and BRC Global Standards. He is responsible for setting up a team to directly engage with customers and partners to develop both value propositions and drive growth and customer satisfaction.
Previously he was Director of Sales for BSI Standards, part of the British Standards Institution Group, and was responsible for selling and developing BSI’s global publishing business through an international network of direct and indirect sales channels.
John has extensive commercial experience in the professional services sector, including managing membership businesses, and prior to working for BSI, he has held commercial roles with Eurofins, Leatherhead Food Research and Whitbread. Over that period he has worked with retailers, manufacturers, certification bodies and regulators at an account management and business development level.
Tessa Kelly - Operations Director
Tessa is Operations Director of BRC Trading, having joined the BRC in 2006 as Director of Business Administration, been appointed Commercial Director in 2008 and taking on the role of Operations Director in 2015.
Prior to joining the BRC Tessa managed the Telephone and Mailing Preference Services for the Direct Marketing Association, both high profile and well-regarded consumer protection services.
Her broad based experience of working with trade associations and commercial companies means Tessa brings a set of unique skills to her current role. Her early career was spent gaining comprehensive marketing and operational experience in domestic and international business-to-business markets. She has an MBA from the Open University and a degree from Sussex University.
